Dennis - "When I had only 4,000 chips I folded A-K pre-flop. Everyone thought I was crazy but the guy had pocket eights and they held. I would have lost and been out."

"Frankie Fish" Hooks A-K

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Sung Lee a.k.a Frankie Fish

Sung Lee's pocket Jacks hold up against two players each with A-K.

The double-up plus gives Frankie Fish some breathing room and a 200,000 stack.

Five hands to go until we call it a night.

Level 13 - Then We Quit For The Night

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Jerry Brown Taking A Break

Forty minutes in Level 13 then we bag and tag for the night.

Gary Lobello Having Fun

A couple big stacks worth mentioning with 113 players remaining:

Jerry Brown (Philadelphia, PA) 227,000

Akim Akimov (Havertown, PA) 222,000

Gary Lobello (Holmdel, NJ) 210,000

Eric Siegel's aces hold - he's at 185,000

Borgata Blinds: 1200 / 2400 with 300 antes.

Siegel Gets Torpekay To Fold Aces Pre-Flop

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

I have Aces in the sb...okay - I'll give you a walk!

Now I've seen everything.

Torpekay Habashzada is sitting on 220,000 after turning a boat and knocking out yet another Opponent.

According to Poker Players International's Eric Siegel (who's to Torpekay's left) everyone keeps folding to her huge stack for fear she'll three and four bet pre-flop.

Sure enough in a blind battle between Torpekay and Siegel, it folds around to Torpekay's small blind.

Eric pipes up "C'mon, show the table you can fold from the small blind."

Habashzada didn't realize Eric was in the big blind and hadn't acted yet.

Thinking she's being nice, she tables two black Aces and mucks em.

Siegel wins with only Q-7.

"I've beaten Aces before but never like that" laughed Eric.

Cap Your Cards

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Nick Gandhi (Stamford, CT)

Looking to double up his 30,000 short stack.

Nick cashed in a WSOP event recently, is looking forward to playing Borgata Summer Poker Open Main Event, then will fly back to Rio for the WSOP Main Event.

Even though it's the first day of summer, Nick is wearing his lucky wool hat which he always wears.

136 players remain.

61,313 average stack.

Blinds are up: Level 12 - 1000 / 2000 with 300 antes

New Chip Leader

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH

Daniel Amsalem 225,000

Daniel Amsalem is the unofficial chip leader after his J-7 sees three callers and he flops the joint.

Opponent ships 55,000 on a flop of 8-9-10 holding J-J.

Daniel fades the Queen and his straight wins a monster pot.

Eugene Gurevich (Manalapan, NJ) has 160,000 and said he's gunning for Daniel.

Dimitri Beros (Baltimore, MD) grinds up to 110,000

Players return from a ten minute break and begin Level 11: 800 / 1600 with 200 antes.

Habashzada Leaves Opponent With Nada

Be very cautious when you tangle with deep stack chip leaders.

On a board of 4
♥ 9♥ 2 ♦ 6 ♦ Opponent raises and Torpekay Habashzada re-raises 15,000.

Opponent ships 50,000 total.

Before Habashzada decides, Opponent accidentally tables two black Kings and says, "Let these be good." Habashzada thinks for four seconds then makes the call showing A
♥ 2♥.

Railbird confidently whispers to me, "she's gonna hit it". And just like that the 6
♥ flushes the felt and Torpekay torpedoes to the chip lead with 160,000.

"You gotta be kidding. What's with these people!" exclaimed Opponent as he immediately left Borgata Poker Room.

I asked Habashzada what went through her mind when he tabled Kings. "I thought I could lose but I didn't think about folding" she said.

Just Stopping By

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack NLH (1B)

As Colonel Poker once wrote, bloggers are always "panning for gold, looking for a big hand or a tasty poker nugget," and the Gorilla spies a little glitter on table 19.

Dan Amsalem (Brooklyn, NY) reraises a player all-in for 30k and gets a call.

Amsalem: K 9
Opponent: K J

Both players have top pair, but a nine on the turn gives Amsalem the best hand as he takes his stack to 125k and is now one of the big stacks in the room.

Level 10 (600/1,200/200 ante) is underway.

Not Afraid Of The Dark

Vinny Gugliucii (Staten Island, NY) flopped quad sixes and couldn't believe his ears. "I'm all in - in the dark" said his Opponent holding A-K hearts and drawing dead on the heart heavy flop.

Vinny took down the 20,000 pot, knocked out a player and pads his stack to 70,000.

Borgata Ink - Armed And Dangerous

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Dave Shafrin (Belleville, NJ) 44,000

Deepstacker Dave Shafrin (Belleville, NJ) shows us his forearm tatts.

For everybody asking us about dinner. THERE IS NO DINNER BREAK - we're playing until 9:00pm through Level 13.

23 Tables remain. 207 players. Ave. chip stack - 40,580.

After ten minute break:
Level 9 - Borgata Blinds: 500 / 1000 with 100 antes.

Dragon Triples Up

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Bruce "Dragon" Bartfeld

Three short stacks shove with great starting hands: J-J vs. 10-10 vs. A-A.

Bruce Bartfeld (Churchville, MD) may have had the worst hand going in but ended up tripling his stack to 30,000 when his 10-10 boated on the river to a paired board.

Bruce, who has a residency in Atlantic City, is a five day a week Borgata cash player (5-10 tables) but also plays the occasional Summer Open tournament.

Jamshidi's Better Half

$500 +60 NLH Deep Stack (1B)

Habashzada - Kids 1st, Poker 2nd

Sirous Jamshidi (Broomall, PA) is an accomplished Borgata regular, who has $1.7 million in career tournament earnings, including a 2nd place finish ($370k) in the 2010 Winter Poker Open Championship event. Since Jamshidi can't play in the Deep Stack, his wife, Torpekay Habashzada, is taking his place, both at the table and at the top of the chip counts.

"She's good," says one player pointing to her 90k stack, "she hasn't had any big hands," as Habashzada clearly has the table's respect.

Habashzada's quick to point out that Jamshidi's the better player and that she doesn't play in tournaments often. "The kids are the most important thing," she says while taking down a 5k pot. "I let Sirous do all the playing."

"Don't let her kid you," chimes in one player, "she taught him everything he knows."

Habashzada, who's originally from Afghanistan, has two teenage children and a 20-year old living at home. She expects Jamshidi to make it to Borgata for the Championship event which starts Friday.

Until then, Habashzada will keep up the family legacy of running well as she's clearly one of the early big stacks.

"Tell Roy his chips are with her," says Alex Im (Washington, D.C.) who hit a three outer to eliminate Roy Winston earlier in the day. "I chased two flush draws and missed and she took it down."

Im is now down to less than 20k after winning the 50k pot from Winston.

Havin' A Balla

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (1B)

Tom "Crystalballer" Balla

Tom Balla (Queens, NY) is among the chipleaders with 96,000.

Took down a big pot after sniffing out a bluff and calling an all-in with middle pair.

A fellow tablemate chimed in, "He had one nice call and three gifts."

In case you're wondering, there's no lenses in Tom's glasses. "They help me see through player's souls", joked Balla. As for the blue glass bird card protector? "I got all the gimmicks today. He's the blue bird of happiness."

Tom (screen name: Crystalballer) won a WSOP main event seat on-line and will head out after finishing up a few more Borgata Summer Poker Open events.

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack (1B)

Will Jaffee (Bridgehampton, NY): "I'm on mega-tilt. I've been bluffed and hero called. No more messing around. Check back in an hour to see if I'm the chip leader or out."

Jason Warriner (Absecon, NJ): "Frustrating, very frustrating. People want to play big pots against me when I flop the nuts. And of course they out draw me. (eliminated during the 5th level)

Robert Nguyen (Brooklyn, NY): "I'm the worst player in the world. Never fold a set of 6s again, ever." (after folding to two players all-in action with two hearts on board, both were on a draw and missed)

Level 5 (200/400/50 ante) is underway.

Sneak Peak

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack (1B)

The unofficial head count for the second starting day is close 350, which puts the two day total at ~500 players (153 Day 1A).

While the cage verifies the buy-ins and the staff calculates the prize pool, here's a look at the ballpark payouts.

Total Entries: 489
Total Buy-In: $244,500
First Prize: ~$68,000
Places Paid: 45
Minimum Cash: ~$875

These total are unofficial until they've been verified.

Level 5 (150/300/25 ante) is underway.

Roy Runs Bad

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack (1B)

Joe Simmons can't help but laugh as Roy Winston shows him the odds calculator for his bad beat hand.

Unless your opponent is drawing dead, it doesn't matter how much of a favorite you are to win a hand, you can still be beat. Roy Winston (New York, NY) is a seasoned pro, who's seen it many times, but says, "this is one of the worst beats I've seen in a long time."

Winston starts the hand with J♦ 10♦ and calls a 450 raise from the button and 5 players go to the flop.

Flop: Q♦ 9♦ 4♠ (Winston flops an open ended straight flush draw)

Checks to Winston, who bets 2k and gets a call from Alex Im (Washington, D.C.).

Turn: K♣ (Winston nut straight, with redraws to the flush and straight flush)

Im checks, Winston bets 6k, Im reraises to 12k, Winston shoves all-in and is at risk.

Im tables K♥ Q♠ (two pairs, and needs the K♠, Q♣ or Q♥ to win)

River: K♠

Im hits the three outer for a full house to win the hand and eliminate Winston during the second level. "All I can do is get it in as a 93% favorite," says Winston, who can only laugh and chalk it up to, "that's poker."

As he stacks the chips, Im says, "I got lucky. I had a feeling about the hand and hit it," as he stacks 50k in chips.

It was no secret that Winston is an accomplished pro and the table breathes a sigh of relief to see "The Oracle" on the rail. Winston smiles, shakes Im's hand and says, "there's nothing more I can do."

Level 4 (100/200) is underway.

Odds Calculator Going to the River

Seat Open, Really!...Seat Open, Really?

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack (1B)

Even deep stacks and long levels aren't enough to keep people from busting early, and this isn't a tale of set over set or anything remotely considered a bad beat.

Basically John Merriam (Parsippany, NY) is given a gift from a player that used to be in seat 7. Merriam limps with KK, looking to trap. When his opponent raises, Merriam 4 bets to 4k and the player calls.

The flop is all low spades, seat 7 moves all-in with an open ended straight draw (no spade) and Merriam thinks about it for two nano-seconds and calls with the king of spades and calls. When the board bricks out Merriam adds 15k to his stack.

"It's a long way to go," says Merriam, "a long way to go."

Players are on a break, getting ready for Level 3 (75/150).

31 players remained after Day 1A, with Adam Cook (Pasadena, MD) leading the way with 255k and Sunday's average stack at 124k. All remaining players return 2 pm Tuesday to play for the title.

At high-noon on Father's Day Sunday, 104 brave souls entered the Borgata Poker Room to take their shot at Omaha Hi/Lo. Their $300 buy-ins created a total prize pool of $30,264 which would be awarded to the final 18 players.

It took fourteen long hours, but in the end it was Vince Coleman of Camden, NJ, who claimed the top prize of $9,321. "I was down to 5,000 chips" Vince said. That was his situation during the play-down from 27 players to the 18 that would get paid. During hand-for-hand play, Vince was nervously circling the tables, checking for other short stacks.

Once the money bubble burst, Vince kicked it into overdrive, pulling off a comeback for the record books. Within an hour, he had grown those 5,000 chips into a stack approaching 100,000. Another half-hour and Vince had doubled his stack again. When they reached the final table, he never looked back. In addition to the prize money, Vince is taking home a beautiful crystal trophy.

Sach Ramrakhani (New York, NY) had to settle for second place and $5,145. Another New Yorker, Jeff Hunter of the Bronx, took 3rd place and $2,875.

Other notables among the field were two previous Borgata Champions. Adel Shakerian of Falls Church, VA, won the Omaha Hi/Lo event during the Borgata Spring Poker Open in April 2010. That earned him $13,489. Tonight he finished 6th for $1,514. He had hoped to repeat as champion, but as he put it, "This is a high variance game. I got unlucky."

William 'Bill' Hine of Bricktown, NJ, won the Omaha Hi/Lo event during the Borgata Winter Poker Open in January 2010. Thanks to a field twice the size of this one, Bill claimed $22,407 for that victory. Tonight he finished 7th for $1,211.

Joseph Gaval (Barnegat, NJ) finished 8th, earning $908. In addition, he claimed the "Father of the Day" award this Father's Day. He has seven children, four girls and three boys, ranging in age from 18 down to 5. "I got up early and did the Father's Day thing, then left to come play poker". Well done, Joseph!

Mark Jones busted out while I was making the previous update and from there, they fell like dominoes. Vince Coleman, who was down to a single 5k chip during the play-down to the bubble, ended up with all the chips and a shiny new trophy! That's one helluva comeback!!

Vince Coleman - 1st place - $9,321

Sach Ramrakhani - 2nd place - $5,145

Jeff Hunter - 3rd place - $2,875

Walter Soho - 4th place - $2,119

Five Alive

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

During level 22 (limits 16k/32k) three players busted out.

Joseph Gaval finished 8th for $908.

Bill Hine

William (Bill) Hine finished 7th for $1,211. Bill won this event during the Borgata Winter Poker Open, taking home $22,407.

Adel Shakerian, the Borgata Spring Poker Open Champ, finished 6th for $1,514.

Another level expired and the limits increased to 20k/40k. The final five players continue to battle. Average stack is 208k.

10th - Wells; 9th - Scavillo

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

Terry Wells (Baltimore, MD) busted out very quickly once the final table got back to business.

The final 9 took a break at the end of the level, then resumed play with level 21, limits 12k/24k.

Jeff Hunter (small blind) got his last chips in on the turn with the board showing T 5 2 2. Vince Coleman and Adel Shakerian both called and the river was a 7. Vince held AA43 for the nut low and Aces-up. Adel held AKJ3 for the same nut low and Ace-high. Vince took three-quarters of the side pot, leaving only one-quarter for Adel.

Jeff tabled a very ragged T962 for deuces-full to take half the main pot. Vince and Adel split the low half.

After three players limped, Joseph raised all-in for 8k more from the small blind. Sean Scavillo called from the big blind and all the limpers called. On the flop of 9 4 2 with two clubs, Jeff Hunter bet, Adel Shakerian called, and Sean folded. Turn was an offsuit 4 and again Jeff bet and Adel called. River was the 6 of clubs. Jeff bet, Adel called.

Jeff tabled AKQ3 with two clubs for the King-high flush and nut low. Adel showed 7642 for fours-full to take the high-half of the side pot. Joseph rolled over AJ43 for the same nut-low to claim a quarter of the main pot, sharing it with Jeff. Adel got half the main pot with his full house.

A short while later, Sean Scavillo was all-in on a flop of K 9 4. Vince and Adel called and the last two came A 7. Vince held ATT9 for Aces-up. Adel held AT63 for the low. Sean showed AQQ5 and couldn't claim any portion of the pot. He was eliminated in 9th place ($681).

Sean Scavillo - 9th place

Final Table

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

Last-woman-sitting Toni Pennington was the next player out. She finished 13th, earning $514.

Joseph Gaval was all-in against two opponents and caught runner-runner for the flush and the high and runner-runner for the nut-low and scooped the pot. He was all in again a couple of hands later and scooped again for another double-up!

Sean Scavillo (Jamison, PA) was all-in against Vince Coleman and Adel Shakerian. Adel got all his chips in on the turn and ended up getting quartered by Vince for the low in both the main and side pots. Sean got half the main pot with a straight. Adel was left with only about 25k.

Michael Demcovitz (Atlantic City, NJ) hit the rail in 12th place earning $590.

Play continued into level 21 with limits of 10k/20k.

Val Seifert was all-in on the flop against 3 players. Sean Scavillo got all-in on the turn against Vince Coleman (Sach Ramrakhani dropped out). Vince and Sean chopped the pot and Val was ousted in 11th place ($590) .

The final ten players drew seats and moved to the final table:

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

Two players were all-in against a third:

Kostadines Kotatis held KQ55 and was the shortest stack.

Val Seifert (Baltimore, MD) held A972 and was the middle stack.

Adel Shakerian held AK44 and had them both covered.

The board came K 9 7 J 8 and with no low possible, Val Seifert took he pot with two pair, 9s & 7s. Konstadines Kotatis (New Milford, NJ) finished in 14th place ($514).

At the end of level 17, they took a break and colored up the 500 chips. Here are some chip counts as of the break:

Vince Coleman - 208k
Walter Soho - 118k
Adel Shakerian - 110k
Jeff Hunter - 107k
Terry Wells - 98k
Bill Hine - 71k
Toni Pennington - 54k
Val Seifert - 51k
Joseph Gaval - 31k

13 players remain. Average stack is 80k.

Level 18 has begun with limits of 8k/16k.

Walter Soho showed me a drawing his six year old daughter made for him. Her name is Victoria and she made this four-leaf clover to give her daddy good luck. It must be working as he is currently second in chips!

Despite his comeback while playing down to the money, Norberto Sopeno wasn't able to maintain the momentum. He was the first player to cash out, finishing 18th and earning $454.

Daniel Spear (Newtown Square, PA) was next to hit the rail. He finished 17th ($454).

Early chip leader Kevin Dwyer has reported to the rail in 16th, good for $454.

Charles Cady, Jr (Middletown, NJ) made the first money bump, finishing 15th for $514.

Meanwhile, Vince Coleman (Camden, NJ) is staging a comeback of his own. During play-down, he was as low as 5,000 chips and now is back up to about 95k!

Vince Coleman

14 players remain as they move into level 18 with limits of 6k/12k. Average stack is just over 74k.

Bubble Burst!

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

The comeback kid, Norberto Sopeno, (Roanoke, VA) is back up to 17k after being down to only 1,500 chips at one point. As players were dropping between 27 and 20, Norberto was all-in repeatedly and kept winning at least half the pots. During hand-for-hand play he continued to chip up to About 24k.

With 19 players remaining, they began playing hand-for-hand. Also, level 16 concluded and they moved into level 17 with limits of 5k/10k.

Toni Pennington (Galloway, NJ) has been the last woman in this event for quite a while and she ended up also being the shortest stack at bubble-time. She had her last 4k all-in and short for the big blind, which should have been 5k. The under-the-gun player put his last 8k all-in and Adel Shakerian made the call. Here are their hands:

Adel: A943
Toni: A♥Q♣7♥7♠
utg: A332 (spades)

The flop came K♥T♥4♥ giving Toni new life with the nut flush. The last two came 2♥ J♠ and there was no low possible. The utg player was busted as the bubble-boy. Adel took the side-pot with just a pair of 4s and Toni was up to 14,500 and in the money!

With 18 players remaining they took a break and then will redraw for seats and move to the final two tables.

Bubble Looms

$300 + $50 Omaha H/L

They resumed play after dinner with level 15, limits 3k/6k.

Only in Omaha Hi/Lo can you flop the nut straight, turn a straight-flush, and end up with only half the pot. That happened to a player holding 8♦6♦5♣5♠. The flop was 7♦6♠4♦ giving him the nut straight, then the 5♦ landed on the turn giving him the straight-flush and a hammer lock on half the pot. His opponent took the other half with A2xx for the nut low.

Terry Wells

Players were dropping fast as the high limits were eating up the short stacks. Terry Wells has taken the lead. He's up to 105k. Adel Shakerian has about 90k.

Walter Soho told me he's taking it easy right now, but as soon at they make the money, (18 players) he's going to kick it into high gear and take this one down!

With 21 players remaining, level 15 concluded and they continued into level 16 with limits of 4k/8k.

Another short-stack was dispatched and with 20 players left they were just two away from payday.

Joseph Gaval (Barnegat, NJ) wins the Father of the Day award this Father's Day. He has seven children, four girls and three boys, ranging in age from 18 down to 5. "I got up early and did the Father's Day thing, then left to come play poker". He lives about 40 minutes away, so the drive wasn't too bad. Perhaps his Father's Day present will be cashing in this tournament!

$500 +60 NL Deep Stack (1A)

The final hand of the day 1A Deep Stack is unkind to Justin Blair who calls the all-in bet of Dominic Popolizio, who's at risk for his final 25k. Blair tables pocket aces vs K 5 and is way ahead until Popolizio flops two pairs and doubles up.

It's a tough hand for Blair who finishes the day last in chips with only 21,200, while giving Popolizio a much needed double up to 56,300.

The chip leader is Adam Cook (Pasadena, MD) who has 255,400 and is looking for another Borgata Summer Poker Open Deep run, after finishing 4th in Event 1 ($200 +$30).

31 players finish the day with an average stack of 124k. Day 1B is Monday at 11 am, with the Day 2 final scheduled for Tuesday.

Hunkele is now the unofficial chip leader with ~200k as he has a healthy stack of the grey (5k) chips.

Level 12 (1k/2k/300 ante) continues. They'll play one more level and then shut it down for the night. Players will be bagging and tagging around 9 pm.

Dinner Time!

The fifth table broke meaning they are down to the final forty players as the last couple of minutes in level 13 ticked away.

Players were dispatched on a 50-minutes dinner break. Play will resume at about 8:20pm.

Walter Soho is at 60k and has been eclipsed for the chip lead by Kevin Dwyer, (Montaugh, NY) who is up to 65k. Coincidentally, Kevin landed in the seat to Walter's left when his table broke, so the two biggest stacks in the room are side-by-side.

The board ran out 7 6 4 7 2 with not a club in sight and Tomasz more than doubled up.

Patrick Hartill

After that hand, Larry was down to about 125k and is no longer the chip leader. Patrick Hartill (Queens, NY) is currently sitting behind 162k.

Larry Nguyen (Bridgewater Twp., NJ) says he's been "lucky" early in this tournament and is riding the wave to the unofficial chip lead. Nguyen has 160k after flopping the nut flush against pocket jacks to win a 50k pot.

He also takes down a 40k pot when he hits a set of 7s on a 4 club board. "He only bet three-thousand," says Nguyen about the turn bet. "For that price I'll try and hit a boat." The board pairs on the river and Nguyen's opponent moves all-in with a 9 high flush, which is far from the nuts.

Engelbert & Jones

After finishing 9th in the Pot Limit Omaha tournament two days ago, Mark Jones (Philadelphia, PA) is looking for another Borgata Summer Poker Open cash in the high/low version of the game.

"I'm a more cautious player," says Jones, "so this is my better game." Comparing PLO to H/L, Jones likes that you can see more cards without risking as many chips in this game. "Earlier today I had the best hand, but it only cost me one big bet. If it had been PLO, I would've been been bet off the hand because he was representing something better than what he had.

Jones has 13k as players are back from break. Sitting to his right is Glenn Engelbert (Gloucester Twp., NJ) who has 17k. "No big hands," he says, "nothing really."

Jones says he hopes to have a better run of cards than the did in PLO. "I was happy to make the money," he says. "I was lucky to get as far as I did."

Level 7 (200/400) is underway.
