Out in Front

$500 + 60 NLH

The suckouts have begun...

Tournament Chip-Leader, Nikolay Volper (Bulgaria) has turned "get it in bad" into "run good".

The small business owner has 146,000 chips and some spooky luck, watch out field.

He busted "Mikey Unbelievable" Dentale when his 55♠ out flopped
J
♠ J on a gross 558J2board.

A few orbits later, he played a huge pot with J3and
outflopped K♣ Jto take the tournament chip lead.

Kind River

After raising preflop with KK, Dylan Mich (Tuckerton, NJ) needs a nice river card to take his stack to more than 100k.

On a board of 3 Q 10, the preflop caller leads out for 6k. Mich reraises to 20k, his opponent goes all-in for 20k more and Mich makes the call.

"You have a set," asks the player at risk while turning over two pairs with Q 10

The turn is a brick, but the river is the 3, saving the day for Mich who says, "not a bad card," as he wins with a higher two pairs.

Level 10 (600/1200/200 ante) is underway.

Rutger Ringer

Hall Leads Early

A Chip Leader has emerged...

Eric Hall - 127,000 chips

Early tournament Chip Leader, Eric Hall, keeps an eye on his increasing stack heading into Level 9.

Players start to loosen up with Blinds @ 500/1,000/100a.

Bottom Pair - Good

$500 + $60 NL

Khaled Phones a Friend with Big News

Just call Ibrahim Khaled (Jersey City, NJ) a wild and crazy guy. After his bluff with 6 2 doesn't work preflop, he goes with plan B to win a big pot.

The board is 6 7 8 rainbow, and Khaled makes a c-bet for 10k. A tight player, who the table says was playing pretty solidly, moves all-in for 30k more. Khaled snap calls with bottom pair and it's a virtual coin flip as the player at risk has J 9 and an open ended straight draw.

The turn and river are bricks and Khaled's stacking 100k in chips, "I'm not going anywhere," he says. "I've got chips in. So what if I'm out, I'll go play cash," he adds, while explaining to the table his rationale.

The rest of the table is amazed and continues to make comments like:

"He didn't call, he snap called."
"Not just bottom pair, but six-deuce."
"Sick read, or crazy man."

Level 8 (400/800/75 ante) is winding down.

Early, Early

$500 + 60 NLH

The Germany vs. Austrailia soccer match has piqued the interest of tournament players in early levels of Borgata's first Deep Stack Event. With deep chip stacks and long levels, play is super snug.

Mixed between Derek Jeter and Chase Utley jerseys are signs of soccer flare, Paul Richemard (pictured below) returns for Deep Stack play after his deep run in Event #2, the aspiring poker star shows off his "Dutch soccer gear".

I Should Know Better!

$500 + $60 NL

Big Haul for Hall

Mike Dentale (Brooklyn, NY) had a sick feeling as the hand played out, but he can't stop the reflex reaction that costs him his tournament life.

"I couldn't win the hand, but I could've lost the minimum," says the New York business owner, "I'm so sick right now, I shouldn't have gone out like that."

Dentale limps UTG with JJ and when the button makes it 1100, his reraise to 3k sets off a chain reaction. One caller, brings in another player and all of sudden there's four to the flop.

The board brings 5 5 8, Dentale leads out for 6k and one player calls. "Right there I know I'm beat," he says.

The turn is the probably the worst card Dentale can see, as a jack gives Dentale a full house. "We both check the turn and it's a smart play. I'm trying to trap with a boat and if he has quads, I'd do the same thing," he says.

The river is a blank and that's when Dentale's reflex's kick in. "I was planning on check-calling the river, but something just happened," he says, adding "I should know better."

Dentale bets 10k, Eric Hall (Staten Island, NY) reraises all-in for 15k more and Dentale can't fold for the nearly 50k pot. "I call," says Dentale, "you've got quads, right?"

Hall confirms the read and shows pocket 5s. "He brought me in," says Hall referencing the player sitting to his right. "If he folds (preflop), I don't come in. I'm getting nearly three-to-one on my money. I have to call," says Hall who now has 125k.

And with that Dentale's day in Borgata Summer Poker Open is done. His parting words: "if I check the river, he bets 10k, I call and I'm still in. I shouldn't have gone out that hand."

Level 6 (200/400/50 ante) continues.

Break Over/Blinds Up

$500 + $60 NL

The players' second break of the day (every two levels) is over and antes are now in effect. Level 5 (150/300/25 ante) is underway.

Tables on the far side of the Poker Room continue to break as the main tables are in the tournament area of the room. 20 tables are running (200 players) after 30 players have been knocked out so far.

Not on a Flush Draw

$500 + $60 NL

Medrano Makin' Things Happen

George Medrano (Rego Park, NY) is a physical therapist who's giving his table a workout.

With A 10, Medrano makes a button raise and gets an early position caller. The flop is A♠ K♣ 9and Medrano calls a pot sized bet. "I figure he's on a flush draw," says Medrano, who had two final tables, and two 11th place finishes at Borgata Poker Opens last year.

The turn is a non-spade and the player fires out another pot size bet. Medrano goes with his read and makes it 15k more and his opponent tanks. "I'm not a flush draw," he says while moving all-in.

Medrano makes the call and is in great shape against A 7 and takes the 50k pot when a blank hits the river.

"A lot of loose play," says Medrano, who's increased his starting stack three fold to 75k, "definitely more loose than tight."

Medrano with chips isn't something the field wants to see. Expect to be hearing more from him throughout the tournament.

Level 4 (100/200) continues.

Familiar Faces

$500 + $60 NL

Martha Doesn't Believe Another Boyle Raise

"Borgata Regulars" is a term we use often during the Summer Poker Open. Over the next three weeks we'll introduce you to the familiar faces we see on a daily basis. Keep an eye out for our Player Profiles that will help put faces to names, and personality to faces.

We found a snap shot at table 5 with James Boyle (Havre de Grace, MD) and Martha Patella (Massapequa Park, NY) who are seated side-by-side. After seeing each of them so often, I ask if they're dating, both respond, almost simultaneously, "not yet!"

Everyone at the table has a good laugh as the camaraderie is infectious.

Level 3 (75/150) continues.

"Seat Open on One"

Apparently 25k in starting chips and three aces on board isn't enough to keep one player from busting in the tournament's first 40 minutes.

Dan Walsh (Holmdel, NJ) makes a 10k value bet on the river with a board of A A 4 A 6 and gets called by a nonbeliever. Walsh shows A 2 for quads and his opponent throws his cards in the muck.

After losing 2/3 of his stack, the same player goes all-in and misses his flush draw. The hand that takes him out? Pocket aces.

Level 2 (50/100) is underway.
