End of Day 1B
$500 + $60 NL
Players are bagging and tagging after completing 12 levels for the day. The unofficial Day 1B chip leader is Dave Weeks (San Diego, CA) who finishes with 318k.
"I ran well and am really happy with how I played," says the 25 year old pro. "My post flop reads were good and that's pretty much what got me where I am."
One of Weeks' more notable hands came late in the day when he turned a straight with 4♦ 5♦. After checking the turn, he says he checked the river when an ace hit the board. "He was a real good player and I thought he'd make a thin value bet."
Weeks' read pays off as his opponent bets 12k into a 15k pot. After feigning a tank, Weeks' reraises to 40k and eventually gets a call. "If I bet there he probably just calls, so I got the most out of it."
Weeks is a Montclair, NJ native and back on the East Coast for a wedding. The trip is allowing him to spend the week playing in the Borgata Summer Poker Open. "If I go deep here, that's great," says Weeks, "but there's still a lot of poker to be played."
126 players remain from Day 1B and they'll join the 55 left from Sunday's Day 1A. The chip leader heading into the Day 2 Final is Nikolay Volper who has 405k and Weeks' should be in second place when play resumes 2 pm Tuesday.

Heavy Hearts
The Borgata poker community is mourning the death of one their own, as Paul "Smalls" Kitsos died of a heart attack while on a New York outbound flight heading to Las Vegas one week ago.
"We're all shocked and sad," says poker friend Barry Leventhal, "my brother will be truly missed."
Kitsos, 55, had nearly $400,000 in career tournament earnings and his biggest score came in the
2008 Borgata Summer Poker Open Main Event, when he finished 5th for $103,500.
More information on Kitsos' life and and details of his death can be found on-line at the New York Post, which first reported the incident.
Players who have stopped by Media Row to express their condolences include Mike Dentale, Arthur Nelson and "Syracuse" Chris. Kitsos extended family at Poker Players International (PPI) is also saddened by the loss.

Ace Magnet

By his count, Bill Celtinieka (Indiana, PA) has had pocket aces 4 times. Not only have the bullets held up, but each time he's gone to the river and gotten paid.
"They don't believe me, but I've had it every time," Celtinieka says, while reminding the table that he's beaten pocket kings, pocket jacks and ace-queen twice.
Without violating blogger-player confidentiality, the Gorilla personally watches three consecutive hands played by Celtinieka and can attest that at least two of the three hands contained at least one bullet.
Somehow the aces keep ending up in Celtinieka's hand, helping him build his stack to 130k.
Level 11 (800/1600/200 ante) is underway.

Sorry, We're Closed

Italian Restaurant owner Richard DeVivo loves Borgata's early week tournaments because those are his days off. "We're closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so this is perfect for me," says the Toms River, NJ entrepreneur.
So far so good in Day 1B of the Deep Stack where DeVivo has more than 125k and is among the chip leaders.
On a board of A 4 4 7 4, DeVivo leads out for 11,500 and is reraised by a player who makes it 30k to go. After a short pause, he makes the call with an ace in his hand and is hopeful that he's not dead to a 4 (quads) or pocket 7s (bigger full house).
The clearly frustrated player mucks and goes out shortly after that when pocket 5s are crushed by pocket kings. "I told you I was on tilt," the player says while leaving the table and, "I did not give him (DeVivo) all those chips."
Two hands later, DeVivo makes a preflop raise to 4k and then calls the all-in shove for 4,900 more. DeVivo's in great shape with Q♠ Q♥ vs 10♣ 10♥. The board runs clean and DeVivo adds another 10k to his stack.
If DeVivo makes a deep run, Preps for the Fettuccine Capri will have to wait another day, as he'll be playing in Tuesday's Day 2 Final.
Level 8 (400/800/75 ante) continues.

Beers Man
$500 + $60 NL
Scoping the room, there's no obvious big stacks in the early going of Day 1B. A lot of players are in the 40-60k range, but nobody is clear of 100k.
One of the larger stacks belongs to Jason Beers (Ottsville, PA) who's sitting on 84k.
He says his big hand is when he flops a flush with Q♥ J♥.
The money goes in on a board of A♥ 3♥ 4♥ and Beers has two players covered who are both all-in. One player has the lower flush with 8♥ 2♥, while the second person flops two pairs with A♦ 3♦.
The board runs clean and Beers wins the brew-ha-ha and the nearly 60k pot.
Level 6 (200/400/50 ante) continues in Event 3 of the Borgata Poker Open.

Losing set over set is a tough way to go out of a tournament, especially during the early levels.
