Event 9: Darren Done in 6th

$300 + $50 PLO

Darren Sylvin (Parsippany, NJ)
6th Place - $1,379

Darren Sylvin has his last 13k all-in, with what the railbirds call "trash," and Frank Pugliese's pocket 10s are good enough to knock Sylvin out in 6th place.

It's Pugliese's third final table elimination, but his chip stack is holding at a steady 125k and is a medium stack.

The big stacks are Mark Steitz and Mike DiFilipo, who both have more than 200k, while Kevin Wolbach & Steven Buckley are the short stacks.

Only 3 Tables Left, Good Luck David.

Event 9: Losing the Harmon-y

$300 + $50 PLO
Peter Harmon (Gaithersburg, MD)
7th Place - $1,149

Peter Harmon raises preflop and Frank Pugliese makes the call from the big blind. The flop is 8-3-4 and Harmon puts his last 55k in with a pair of aces in the hole.

Pugliese calls with 6-3-5-Q for a pair of threes and an open ended straight draw. Pugliese hits the straight with a 7 on the turn and Harmon is done for the day.

Level 17 (4k/8k) is underway.

Money Bubble

$300 + 50 NL

Number of Entries: 251
Players Remaining: 28
Prizepool: $75,300

Players are on the Money Bubble,
one more bust and we're in the money.

Play is currently Hand for Hand.

Event 9: Dalessandro Down

$300 + $50 PLO

Tim Dalessandro (West Chester, PA)
8th Place - $920

Tim Dalessandro is on the rail after his pair of kings in the hole are beaten by Mark Steitz who holds 7-4-6-5. Steitz flops two pairs and winds up with a straight when an 8 hits the turn, as Dalessandro heads to the cage for an 8th place finish at the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Blinds are up to 3k/6k as Level 16 is underway.

Event 9: Jonesing for the Money

$300 + $50 PLO

Mark Jones (Philadelphia, PA)
9th Place - $690

Mark Jones is in the big blind for 4k and reluctantly puts in his final 6k to try and stay alive.

There's a dry side pot between Darren Sylvin and Frank Pugliese and when the dust settles, Pugliese tables A-5-3-7 for trip 5s to eliminate Jones in 9th place in Event 9 of the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Event 9: Off The Marc

$300 + $50 PLO

Aronson Out in 10th (Bubble Boy)

The bubble breaks when Marc Aronson (Bronx, NY) puts in his last 25k after flopping a set. Mark Steitz makes the call and gets help when he hits a gutter ball on the turn.

Steitz's straight knocks out Aronson in 10th place, guaranteeing the final nine players at least $690.

Level 15 (2k/4k) continues.

Event 9: Boiling Bubbles

$300 + $50 PLO

Borgata's Top 10 in PLO

The action is really heating up with the two big stacks colliding as the remaining 10 players are on the bubble, one spot off the money.

Steven Buckley has no fear and on back-to-back hands pots the action preflop after a raise by chip leader Mark Steitz. After folding the first time, Steitz makes the call and they see a flop of
A 4 J.

Buckley, who projects the image of a wild man, leads out for 30k and after tanking, Steitz makes the call.

The turn is the 3, and Buckley pushes all in for ~80k, putting Steitz to the test. Steitz, the more conservative of the two players, folds after a lot of internal deliberation. "I picked up another draw," he says.

Buckley's now the chip leader and quickly tables A6, for top pair and the nut flush draw.

Steitz has lost ~70k since play is down to one table.

Players are now on dinner break and play resumes with Level 15 (2k/4k).

Event 8: Slow Go

$300 + $50 NLH

Only one player has busted since the field returned from dinner break, putting the number at 39.

Bob Florence (Martinsburg, WV) continues to muscle his table with the big stack.

Level 12 (1k/2k/300 ante) is underway.

Event 9: Final Table (Sort of)

$300 + $50 PLO

The final 10 players are all seat at one table, but some in the poker world don't consider it a final table until only nine remain. That's a debate for another time, but for now these players are on the bubble as the top nine cash.

Seat-Name-Chip Count

1. Darren Sylvin (Parsippany, NJ) 38k
2. Peter Harmon (Gaithersburg, MD) 24k
3. Marc Aronson (Brooklyn, NY) 86k
4. Mark Steitz (Marlton, NJ) 170k
5. Mike DiFilipo (Marlton, NJ) 31k
6. Kevin Wolbach (Macungie, PA) 63k
7. Tim Dalesssandro (West Chester, PA) 32k
8. Steven Buckley (Washington Township, NJ) 155k
9. Frank Pugliese (West Patterson, NJ) 143k
10. Mark Jones (Philadelphia, PA) 20k

Event 8: Chow Time

Players Remaining: 40
Average Stack: 63k
Top Prize $21,912
Places Paid: 27

Level 12 (1k/2k/300 ante) resumes at 7:40 pm.

Event 9: Chip Leader

$300 + $50 PLO

After level 12 concluded, the PLO players took off for a break while the staff colored up the black 100 chips. The top three in chips are

Mark Steitz - 122k
Steven Buckley - 109k
Kevin Wolbach - 90k

Play has now resumed with level 13, blinds 1k/2k.

Event 9: Difilipo Doubles

$300 + $50 PLO

Playing 800/1,600:

Mark Steitz doubled up a short-stacked player when his K886 double-suited fell to his opponent's K976.

Mike Difilipo (button) moved his last chips in on the turn with the board showing K 5 4 4 (two spades). Steve Tindle (small blind) gave it some thought, then made the call, showing A764 (hearts/clubs) for trip 4s. Mike held KJ74 (spades/hearts) for Fours-full of Kings. Only an Ace on the river would help Steve, but instead it was a 6. Mike doubled up to about 50k.

On the next hand, seat 4 moved his last chips in on a flop of A 5 2. Mike made the call showing AA85 for top set. Seat 4 held J922 for bottom set. Only the case 2 would save him, but it did not appear and he was busted. Mike chipped up to about 90k, making a nice comeback.

With 18 players remaining, they did a redraw and moved to the final two tables. Only the final 9 will get paid.

Event 8: A Mountain-eer of Chips

$300 + $50 NLH

Florence & Caruso

Bob Florence (Martinsburg, WV) has nearly $150,000 in career tournament earnings, which includes a WSOP circuit championship, and now the Mountaineer man is running over his table at the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Florence has most of the field covered with just his gray, 5k chips (130k) and has nearly just has much in the other denominations for 245k total. "I've been getting some cards I guess," says the southern gentleman.

Seated directly to his left is Anthony Caruso (Medford, NJ) who has around 25k, which is roughly half of Florence's orange, 1k chips. "Help me," Caruso mouths across the room, as he clearly has the worst seat in the house.

Level (800/1600/200 ante) continues.

Event 9: Steitz Snuffs Simmons

$300 + $50 PLO

About half-way through level 11, blinds 600/1,200.

Mark Steitz

After Mark Steitz (Marlton, NJ) opened, Joe Simmons moved all-in for 10,800 from the button. Mark thought about it for a few moments, then made the call. Joe tabled JJ54 (spades/clubs). Mark held KQQT (spades to nullify Joe's spades).

The flop came A Q T giving Mark a set. When a Ten paired the board on the turn, it was all over. Mark had made a full house and Joe was sent packing.

Mark is up to ~105k and coincidentally is sitting to the left of chip leader Steven Buckley, who has about 115k.

21 players remain. Average is over 37,600.

Event 8: Going Green

$300 + $50 NLH

The green (25) chips are off the table as players return from their third break of the day.

Entries: 251
Players Remaining: 63
Average Stack: 40k
Top Prize $21,912
Places Paid: 27

Level 10 (600/1,200/200 ante) is underway.

Event 9: Buckley Busts Another

$300 + $50 PLO

Playing level 10 with 500/1,000 blinds:

Self-proclaimed donk Steven Buckley continues to run well. After the utg player limped, Steven raised pot to 4,500. Seat 7 (big blind) called, as did the utg player.

On the flop of T 9 5 with two spades, they checked to Steven, who pointed to the pot and said "Whatever that is is what I bet". Turns out the bet was 14k. Seat 7 looked him over and then moved all-in. The utg player opted out.

Steven eagerly made the call, tabling TT72 (clubs) for top set. Seat 7 held JJ99 double-suited in hearts and diamonds. His set was in bad shape and he was drawing slim to a Jack for a bigger set or an 8 for the straight (without the board pairing).

It was not meant to be as the last two came running 4s, giving Steven the full boat and the pot. Steven is now up to ~114k.

27 players remain.

Event 8: Shrinking Fast

$300 + $50 NLH

All players are now in the tournament area of the poker room as 68 players remain on 7 tables.

Random quotes we've heard throughout the day.

"Nice hand sir, 10-8," says David Rao (Fredricksburg, VA). "I'm going to start playing that when I go home and play on (Poker) Stars."

"I play Full Tilt," the older gentleman replies.

"Then I guess we won't be playing each other. And I'll make sure the 10 8 is offsuit when I play it."

***********

"Ace-King is the worst hand to have," says Ivan Bailey (Washington, D.C.). "I hate that hand," he says while eliminating a player with it. "Everyone knows what I mean," adding. "I hate it."

Level 9 (500/1k/100 ante) continues.

Event 9: New PLO Leader

$300 + $50 PLO

As I was squinting at Steven Buckley's chips trying to get an eyeball-estimate, he said "It's about 87k, I think". That looks about right to me and puts him firmly in the chip lead.

Steven Buckley

Steven, who claims to be a 'Minute Man' from Washington Township, NJ, said "I'm such a donk. Come back in a few minutes and it'll be about 10k and much easier to count.

"Hey Minute Man, it's your small blind" said the dealer. Had to let Steven get back to business.

They're down to 30 players. Only the final 9 get paid. Average stack is about 26,300.

Level 9 has concluded and they're taking a break.

Event 8: Blog It!

$300 + $50 NLH

Bradley Battles Back

After tearing up his home game and burning up the internet with his blog posts, Bradley Utz (Raliegh, NC) is playing in his second event of the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Utz is in the big blind when the button limps and the two see a flop of J 9 2. Utz leads out, is reraised and then, with stealth like precision, slides in his last 5,800.

The big blind tanks and folds as Utz feigns a sigh of relief and follows it with, "you should've called off on the end," as neither player shows.

Utz, no relation to the pretzel family, is now at 23k after suffering a bad beat when his set was chased down by runner-runner flush.

Level 9 (500/1000/100 ante) is underway.

(Chips in this photo may or may not reflect an accurate count)

Event 9: Dallessandro Dominating

32 players remain. Playing 300/600:

Tim Dallessandro and four other players limped to a flop of K 6 2 with two hearts. Seat 9 (big blind) led out with a pot-sized bet of 3k. Kevin Wolbach folded, Tim called, and the other two players folded.

They were heads-up to the turn which was an offsuit Deuce. Again seat 9 fired 3k and Tim flat-called. River was an offsuit 6 and this time seat 9 checked. It was Tim's turn to fire out a 3k bet and he got the call. Tim rolled over KQ52 double-suited (spades/clubs) for Deuces-full of Kings. Seat 9 mucked.

With that pot, Tim chipped up to ~53k.

Event 9: Grinding Away

$300 + $50 PLO

They're down to five tables over in the PLO event.

Defending runner-up Thomas Palombo is history. His Buddha card protector didn't do the job today and he has busted out.

Kevin Wolbach and Tim Dallessandro

Kevin Wolbach (Macungie,PA) is the current chip leader with about 55k and Tim Dalessandro could be second with ~40k. They also happen to be seated side-by-side.

The last few minutes of level 7 (blinds 200/400) are winding down. Play will continue into level 8 with blinds of 300/600.

Event 8: Strong Motivation

$300 + $50 NLH

Quads: So Easy a Donk Can Win with them

If motivational speaker Rob Grosch's clients knew that his friends call him "Donk," they may not
as quick to sign up for his seminars.

"It's only because of my poker," says the Ridge Field, NJ resident, "it doesn't have anything to do with work."

Grosch is an energetic player who's picking up chips after a long dry spell earlier in the day. "It was the best hand I saw in three hours he says," while holding A 10. The flop gives him trip tens and he cracks pocket aces to win a 20k pot.

A few hands later, Grosch picks up pocket queens vs pocket jacks and it's overkill when he goes runner-runner quads. The hand adds another 10k to his stack and Grosch is now close to 70k.

Level 8 (400/800/75 ante) is underway.

Event 8: 64 Thousand Chip Question

$300 + $50 NLH

Knowing your opponent helps Mark Vogler (Deer Park, NY) take down a nice pot, pushing his stack to 64k.

"I played with him last night," says Vogler, who sets up his man with pocket aces from the big blind. "I knew if it looked like I was making a move I could trap him."

After two players call a preflop raise, Vogler pumps the pot and gets one player to call. The flop comes king high and Vogler moves all-in, an over bet for the pot size.

His opponent calls and is bad shape with KQ, dusting off 17k to Vogler when the aces hold.

Level 7 (300/600/75 ante) is underway.

Event 9: Title Defense

$300 + $50 PLO

Thomas Palombo

Thomas Palombo (Pennington, NJ) is (sort of) defending his title today. He actually finished second in this event during last year's Borgata Summer Poker Open ($8,628).

His Buddha card protector isn't helping so far today as Thomas' stack is dwindling.

Play has proceeded into level 6 with blinds of 150/300.

19-27th ........ $548

16 tables remain with about ten minutes to go in level 5.

Event 9: Level 4

$300 + $50 PLO

The PLO players took their first break after level 3 and have resumed play with level 4, blinds 75/150.

Mike Difilipo and Steve Tindle

Mike Difilipo (Marlton, NJ) and Steve Tindle (Washington, DC) are two of the bigger stacks in the room. Mike has about 31k and Steve has about 25k. They also happen to be sitting next to each other at the same table.

Joe Simmons is up to about 20k.

They're down to 7 tables now.

Event 8: Kings Good

$300 + $50 NL

After seat 9 three-bet to 2,400, Peter Nolastname (Brick, NJ) moved in from the button. After a couple of minutes in the tank, seat 9 called all in, tabling pocket 9s. Peter held pocket Kings and was out in front.

He was relieved his opponent wasn't holding AK when the flop came A 6 5. (Apparently there is an unwritten rule that when someone is holding pocket Kings, and Ace will always flop.) The last two fell safely for Peter with no 9 appearing and he took the pot, chipping up to about 23k. Seat 9 reported to the rail.

19 tables remain in this event, so fewer than 190 players remain.

Mark Vogler

Mark Vogler (Deer Park, NY) is up to about 44k and he pulled another pot while I was watching. His opponent bet 1,500 on the river on a very scattered board. Mark called and his pocket 3s were good when his opponent produced nothing but King-high. After adding a couple thousand more to his stack, Mark should be second is chips now.

Charles Zadikow looks to be third in chips with about 43k.

Play continues in level 5 with blinds of 150/300 and 25 antes.

Event 8: Back from Break

$300 + $50 NL

At the end of level 3, the No Limit players took their first break of the day. They've now returned to the felt with level 4, blinds 100/200.

Jim Coffey is still in the lead. He's expanded his stack to about 50k.

21 tables remain. About 210 (or fewer) players are still alive.

Event 9: Blinds Up

$300 + $50 PLO

PLO players are in level 2 with blinds of 25/50. Nine tables are now in action but the last one only has three players, so the player count is creeping up on 90. Entries are still being accepted through level 2.

A handful of players who have busted out of today's 11am NL Hold'em event are appearing in the PLO field, perhaps hoping a change of game will change their luck.

Joe Simmons

Most notable among the PLO players is Joe Simmons (Philadelphia, PA). Joe made his mark on the poker world in 2007 when he final-tabled the $10k Borgata Poker Classic WPT Championship event, finishing 4th for $387,709. His lifetime tournament earnings are now over $740,000.

Joe is a DJ, rapper, writer, producer, and former manager of the internationally acclaimed hip-hop group The Roots. He's also a regular in the high-stakes cash games here at Borgata.

Event 8: Blinds Up

$300 + $50 NL

Level 3: Blinds 75/150. Play continues.

Jim Coffey

A chip leader has emerged over on table 13. Jim Coffey (Stanford, CT) is sitting behind about 40k, quadruple what he started with just two levels ago.

His first double-up came thanks to pocket Aces that held up. Then he had pocket Queens, flopped top set, and busted a player. Then he had pocket Aces, again, which held up, again. "Tell 'em I'm getting run over by the deck" Jim said. I should say so!

They just replaced the shuffle machine on table 13 due to a malfunction, so it will be interesting to see if Jim's rush continues.

Event 9: PLO Underway

$300 + $50 PLO

Cards are in the air on the far side of the room as about seven tables (10 handed) of Pot Limit Omaha enthusiasts are in action. They began with 10,000 chips and blinds of 25/25.

Levels last 30 minutes and late entries will be taken through the first two levels.

Event 8: The Usual Suspects

$300 + $50 NL

Level 2: Blinds 50/100. Play continues. There are 22 ten-handed tables in action with players still entering, so the player count should be in the neighborhood of 220-230.

Today's event is filled with many of the same faces you've seen over the previous week. I spotted Gregory Bock, Matt 'Muffins' Mazzeo, and Joanne Monteavaro.

Ed Corrado

Also in the field today is Ed Corrado (Naples, FL). Ed finished 4th in the WSOP Circuit Bayou Poker Challenge Championship Event last month, taking home over $59,000. That put his lifetime tournament earnings over half a million.

Another roar from the crowd meant the USA scored and tied Slovenia 2-all in their World Cup match. There was another roar soon after, but the goal that would have put the USA in the lead was nullified due to an offsides call.

Event 8: Cards are in the Air

$300 + $50 NL

Cards are in the air for Event 8, the $300+$50 No Limit event. Players began with 10,000 chips and 25/50 blinds.

Players are still registering (over 225 so far) and there is a "relatively short" line at the registration window. Entries will be taken through the first two levels which are 40 minutes each.

The poker room is a bit quiet this morning, (unlike last night during game 7 of the NBA Finals) except when the USA scored against Slovenia in the World Cup match currently showing on most of the screens. A load roar went up from the crowd, despite the fact that the USA is still down by a goal.
