Dave "The Mortician" Cericola

Meet Dave Cericola (Philadelphia, PA).

For twelve years Dave has operated as a funeral director in Darby PA, outside of Philly, for his girlfriend's families' funeral parlor. "I love it" says Dave.

In addition he's going to dealer's school to hone some skills and hopefully pick up part time work.

Dave enjoys burying people in the ground, and at the poker table. He was down to 18,000 but has battled back to 186,000. I watched him make more than one correct laydown.

He's been playing poker five years and favors tournaments.

Dave gives new meaning to the term "drawing dead".

The First Noel

$170 + 30 NLH Re-Entry

Bobby Noel - Chip Leader - 500,000

Biggest pot of the tournament so far as two monster stacks collide.

Khal (Lancaster, PA) opens for 30,000.

Bobby Noel (Johnstown, PA) shoves his big stack in the Big Blind and Khal calls.

Noel's K-K vs. Khal's K-10 clubs.

Board runs out Q-6-2-2-3.

Both gents have about the same number of chips but after a count, Bobby Noel has Khal covered.

Khal's out and Noel is your chip leader with 500,000.

Bobby suggested I take his photo this morning before the sun rose, during the deepstack final table, fully expecting I would need it today.

"Now I'll take your photo, you're the chip leader" - Colonel Poker.

I asked Bobby what he did in Johnstown other than play on-line poker?

"There's not a whole lot to do in Johnstown" admitted Noel.

You Can Calllll Me Khal

$170 + 30 NLH Re-Entry

Khal (Lancaster, PA) goes from 100,000 to 300,000 in three key hands all dealt by Edwin who indeed did generate some action as promised.

Khal, a middle aged man who apparently only goes by one name, knocked two players out in two hands back to back. Khal's holdings in his key winning hands? Q-4, A-7, and K-9.

Khal, an economics professor at Millersville University in Pennsylvania told us, "The President of the University played today too but he was out in the first half-hour."

Red Kicks for Luck

$170 + 30 NLH Re-Entry

Tom Gandolfo - 51,000 chips

The tournament short stack looks for help from the "lucky red shoes."

Players are back from Dinner Break,
64 players fighting for $26,731 and the Borgata trophy.

Are You Experienced?

$170 + 30 NLH Re-Entry

Graeson Burnette-Peake (Philadelphia, PA)

Is there such thing as a home field advantage in poker?

Graeson Burnett-Peake (Philadelphia, PA) normally plays at Borgata five days a week plus he's playing a full slate of tournaments in this years Summer Open. Point is, he's been in this situation before. He's holding an average stack and is ready to move up - looking to cash.

Players are getting sluggish after dinner break. Blinds are increasing and it's time to let your experience kick in. Experience with the players you've been playing with for hours, experience with how to play at each level, and experience in closing out a tournament.

Graeson - "I've got a little feel for these players. Time to sense weakness when you can and attack. Time to build chips. You gotta stack. Nobody wants to get it in bad."

Graeson seems to think Borgata Dealer Edwin will help generate some action at the table. Edwin's excited about the $332,544 bad beat jackpot that of course doesn't count if it hits in a tournament.

Level 16 After Ten Minute Color Up Break

$170 + 30 NLH Re-Entry

Ten Minute Color Up Break:

Getting the black chips off the table.

7 tables with 64 players fighting it out.

88,900 average chip stack.

When we return: Level 16 - 3000 / 6000 with 500 antes.

Pretty quiet out there. We're not seeing much action except for the occasional short stack jamming after the flop with larger stacks folding.

Watch Group

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Michael, Dikker & Patterson (l-r)

Two of the three member of the unofficial "watch club" are involved in a hand that Dan Patterson (Oakland, NJ) ends up winning when his postflop bet isn't called as he tables 88.

"Nice hand," says Michael from New York, who's skipping work and doesn't want to reveal more than that. "I had pocket queens," he says after a king hits the board.

Both players, along with Anna Kikker (Marlboro, NJ) are sporting killer watches. Kikker has an everyday ToyWatch, Patterson bought himself a Swiss Army after a good day at the tables, while Michael was given his Breitling as a gift.

Level 12 (1k/2k/300 ante) is complete and players are on a 10 minute break.

Mayhem At Seven

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Table Mates

Table Seven has been the loudest and craziest so far today.

A lot of standing, cheering, hooting and hollering after one and two outters continue to spike the felt. So many tables are all business - extremely serious. Seven got my attention because they're all talking, joking and having fun.

While I was visiting Table Seven Stan Zavoyskiy (Brooklyn, NY) chopped a pot with Chris Walker (Baltimore, MD) - both had A-K offsuit.

"I told you, I'm never gonna fold A-K never again in any situation" said Stan.

Greg Drobris (Old, Bridge, NJ) when asked about the atmosphere at the table, said with a smile, "We're all friends here. We're gonna show pictures of our families to each other later."

Walker mumbled - "I don't like any of them."

Jerry Citro (Jim Thorpe, PA) is having a good time. His advice, "Forget about the bad beats and you're in good shape."

Larry Ohalloran (Colonia, NJ) chortled, "I'm having fun although that one guy's a little annoying." Guess Larry won't be invited to the Table 7 family reunion.

Fisher-Priced In

100k Climb

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Chappy Chippin' Up

As the field thins, stacks grow and we've stumbled across several players who have more than 100k in chips.

"Come on man, there's like 500 people left," says Ryan "Chappy" Chapman (Washington, DC), who's trying to keep a low profile.

Actually, there's approximately 200 players remaining as tables in the main area of the Poker Room continue to break. Chapman was recently moved to the tournament area and his stack increases when his pocket 10s eliminates a player with pocket 7s.

"I just want to keep running good and win races," he says.

Level 10 (600/1200/200 ante) continues.

Color Up Break - Take Ten

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

All in at table 5.

FLOP: 6 10 9
TURN: 6
RIVER: 3

Seat open at table 5!

Brian Maqellara (Staten Island, NY) knocks a Woman out and builds his stack to 80,000.

Brian's game today - steady, no real bad beats or suck outs.

"I'm just playing my game" said Maqellara.

Color Up Ten Minute Break:

Green chips are coming off the table.

Next Up: Level 10

Borgata Blinds - 600 / 1200 with 200 antes.

OG Hits One Outer

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Anthony "Original Gorilla" Shurilla

The Original Gorilla Shurilla (Longswamp Twp., PA) needs a whole lot of help when he's all-in and at risk with JJ vs KK.

"I folded a jack," says one player. So with a 10% chance to win the hand, the last jack in the deck appears in the window and Shurilla doubles his 5500 and is now working his stack to north of 40k.

"I'll take it," says OG, who is a notorious complainer about losing to opponents who suck out on the river. "It definitely makes up for that," he says.

Shurilla made his first Borgata final table in this event during January's Borgata Winter Poker Open.

Level 9 (500/1k/100 ante) continues.

Rough Tough & In The Bluff

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Dan Dizenzo (Vernon, NJ)

Dan Dizenzo (Vernon, NJ) raises 1850 on a flop of K
3 K .

His Opponent, three times his age, re-raises to 5000.

Dan ponders a moment, shuffles a few chips, then re-raises to 12,000 total.

Opponent tanks, then folds.

Dan proudly flips over 4
2 .

Opponent - "I didn't think you had the king."
Dan - "I didn't think you had a king either."

"He played 80 hands and bluffed 60 of em", uttered the player to Dan's left.

"I raised the first ten hands and showed eight bluffs. Now nobody thinks I ever have a hand."

The great Stu Unger once bluffed and showed 7 times in a row in a tournament - looks like Dan's trying to one up him.

Dan's sitting on 75,000 in chips. This is his third tournament in the 2010 Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Watch out for this guy!

Tally Time

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

The unofficial count for Event 5 of the Borgata Summer Poker Open is 569, which puts the prize pool well above the $50,000 guarantee.

As the prize pool is tabulated the early projections are:

Entries: 569
Total Buy-In: $96,730
First Place: ~$26,732
Places Paid: 54
Minimum Cash: ~$281

Level 7 (300/600/75) continues.

4 Way All-In

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

No Foreclosure for White's House

All-in, call, all-in, call and just like that 4 hands are turned over and three players are at risk.

On a board of K Q 3 we see:

Player 1: A A (pair of aces)
Player 2: J 10 (flush/straight flush draw)
Player 3: 3 3 (set of threes)
Player 4: K J (pair of kings)

Turn: J
River: Q(Player 3, winning full house)

Wanson White (Richmond, VA) knocks out two players and cripples the player with pocket aces.

"It's time to step up my game," says the home game player who knew he was 50/50 to win the hand after the flop.

This is White's first Borgata tournament and so far so good as he turns 7500 into more than 30k.

Level 6 (200/4005/50 ante) winding down.

Don't Blog Me

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Not "Josh"-ing Around with Ace-King
(protecting his privacy, sort of?)

One player is trying to fly under the radar with 40k in chips, but his table won't let him forget that he got them in one big pot.

Six players are in a limped pot on a board of K 8 6. Eventually three players are all in and the hands are:

AK (top pair, top kicker)
KQ (pair of kings)
86 (two pairs)

The turn and river are both 7s, giving the two players with kings a higher two pairs.

Vinny Runfolo (Hammonton, NJ) is less than thrilled with getting counterfeitted and the cleaned up version of his quote is, "I got the short end of the stick."

The winning player doesn't want to reveal his name and says, "you can call me Josh."

Runfolo's quick to respond, "he doesn't want everyone to know that he limped with ace-king from the big blind."

"I had the best hand preflop," fires back the mystery man.

"Yeah, that's what you want, 6 way action with ace-king," says Runfolo, who's left with only a few thousand chips and has already doubled-up since.

Level 4 (150/300/25 ante) continues.

500 & Counting

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Short Stacks' Last Chance

The short stacks are taking their final shots at doubling up as Level 3 winds down. "Three minutes to ship boys," shouts one player as this is the last level to re-enter the tournament.

Ted Geier (Sunnyside, NY) is taking full advantage of the structure, "I'm now a force to be reckon with," he says as he rolls his eyes after re-entering for a second time (three total).

Another player shouts to the floor manager, "If I'm all-in now, can I still get back in," this with 15 seconds on the clock. After getting confirmation the player says, "call," misses the straight draw and then before we can get his name is back in line for the last second re-entry.

More than 500 players are in the field as they head to a 15 minute break.

Yes or No?

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

Not a "Syn"-koski to Re-Enter

A bad beat, a missed draw and redemption for flat out awful play are all reasons to get back in line and re-enter the tournament. But not everyone is willing to take advantage of a second chance.

Here's what people are saying about the option to re-enter:

James "Suits" Salters (Lakeview, NY), "Absolutely, but I don't plan on it."

Tuan Gbehan (Toms River, NJ), "No, I just won't do it."

Luis Santiago (Newark, NJ), "Nope, I'm one and done."

Kathy Synkoski (Fredrick, MD), "I plan on making a big comeback, with or without it."

Level 3 (75/150) is underway.

Seat Open....

$170 + $30 NL Re-Entry

....table 5, table 7, table 8, table 21 and the list goes on and on. Players look at the re-entry as a chance to speculate with a solid backup plan.

"It was the perfect re-buy (re-entry) situation," says Ted Geier (Sunnyside, NY). "I had the nut flush draw, there was so much money in the pot, I just missed," he says while heading back to the cage.

Level 2 (50/100) is underway with the re-entry period ending after Level 3.

Excellent job.

Marchese Doubles Through Volper

Short stack Charlie "Chaz" Marchese thought the river killed him.

Charlie, holding K-J up against Nikolay's K-8 of diamonds.

Both all in on the flop of K-Q-3 (two clubs).

Turn was a Queen.

Nikolay shouts out, "I need an eight".

The eight comes but it didn't improve his hand.

Chaz thought he lost until realizing he had Kings over Queens with a Jack kicker for the scoop.

Joe Altomonte - 4th Place - $20,494

They've been battling wits the entire final table.

Nikolay Volper vs. Joe Altomonte.

Earlier Joe said he was going to have nightmares about Nikolay and I believe tonight he will.

They both got in good but short stack Altomonte's A-K missed the coin flip against Volper's 8-8.

Board of 10-4-Q-9-7 was the end of the road for Joe.

"Good hand Nik" said Joe as members of the rail broke into a splattering of applause.

What an amazing comeback for Joe from where he was yesterday. Great job!

Joe Altomonte At Two Million

Joe "Comeback Kid" Altomonte (West Patterson, NJ) finished Tom Flanagan off in a small/big blind battle that would prove fatal for Flanagan.

Tom's small blind A-6 vs. Joe's big blind 3-3.

Three's hold sending Flanagan home in 14th place for $2,884.

Joe's right at 2 million and seated at the same table as Carl Restifo (also with 2 million).

Carl Restifo (Waretown, NJ) opened with A-Q and was flat called by Tom Flanagan.

With an innocuous Q high flop, Opponent bet big and Carl shoved.

Whoopsie, Opponent tabled K-K.

No problem for Carl as a Queen spikes the turn.

Two million chips and the lead for Restifo.
